Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Englishtafsir.com was out of service from 16 January 2009 to 13 February 2009. What happened?
A: Server difficulties. After a one month loss of service, We are pleased to note that englishtafsir.com is back online. We have a new, larger, more reliable, server, and we finished uploading the source files onto it on 13 February 09. Our apologies to all of you who have waited patiently for englishtafsir.com to be fixed.
Q: Which translation of Tafhim al-Qur'an do you use?
A: The translation on this website is a transcription from the first translation of Maududi's Tafhim al-Qur'an, which is titled The Meaning of the Quran. The Islamic Foundation UK has published a second (newer) translation, entitled Towards Understanding the Quran.
Q: Why did you make englishtafsir.com?
A: We wanted an online Quran tafsir. One with the Arabic text. One with an easy to read English translation. One with embedded footnotes to a more detailed commentary, but only when needed. We searched the internet for such an easy to use Quran translation. we could not find one. So we developed one.
Q: Is this freeware?
A: Englishtafsir.com is freeware. We developed it for our own benefit, for the benefit of the Muslims, and for the benefit of humanity. Because we did not translate the work, nor did we publish the printed edition, we claim no copyright. It is inappropriate to place restrictions on knowledge, especially knowledge of Quran.
Q: Really? May I do as I please with these files?
A: You may do anything you like. Copy freely. Distribute freely. Modify freely. Develop a mirror. Develop multiple mirrors. Incorporate it into your website. Make corrections. Distribute the zip file on file sharing networks. Create pdf files that are easy to print and distribute them. Make an eBook. Insert audio clips into the text. Develop a software program for the iPhone. Use your imagination. You have more than my permission, you have my encouragement. We do ask, however, that in whatever project you do, please include a link back to englishtafsir.com as we would certainly appreciate any web traffic you may be able to provide.
Q: Do you make any money off this site?
A: No. While we could cover our expenses and perhaps make a profit by placing ads on this site, we are uncomfortable about the idea. Quran is not something to be commercialised.
Q: How do I donate to help cover the expenses of maintaining englishtafsir.com?
A: Thank you for your kind offer, but our expenses are covered. If you would like to make a donation, we recommend that you give that money to the needy and poor in this world, people who really need it. Find a cause, and support it. We like the Zakat Foundation.
Q: Are they legitimate?
A: Charity Navigator, a group that monitors charities, gave Zakat Foundation four stars. For reference, the SPCA is also a four star charity, while the American Red Cross was rated two stars.
Insha Allah.
